Timber is a product that has been being used for thousands of years in many different guises. It is a material being developed and researched by many institutions across the world and technology is constantly being updated to match patterns of use.

Uruguay has traditionally been resistant to the use of wood, hence has not developed techniques in timber like other countries such as the UK, Germany and Sweden. These countries have applied wood in different ways to meet their housing needs for centuries, with factors like climate, timber strength and indigenous supply affecting the final designs.

Individuals and institutions in Uruguay are interested in the application of modern timber methods to their construction industry, with a subsequent development of the knowledge base in timber. For this reason we will be studying Modern Timber techniques and their potential to be implemented into Uruguayan industry.

Our specific interest is in researching the joints between wood within a construction technique or between different construction techniques. We will be eventually testing some joints to destruction under laboratory conditions, in order to understand the merits of a variety of techniques using Indigenous timber from Uruguay.
